is pcie 4.0 mandatory when purchasing a new motherboard?"?????? :eh?:
Nope!

It offers double the bandwidth, but you get the most out of a 2080 Ti through it PCIe 3.0 (it's also a 3.0 card, no choice :p). Maybe in a couple of graphic card generations, it will be helpful? Can't hurt though!

okay..thanks..i have posted this probably in wrong forum..i have a amd x370 pro gaming carbon, had latest bios update...i checked the pcie in the bios, looks like pcie 4 is supported..

The industry needs PCIe Gen 4 for NVMe and network speeds (25Gig+) thats about it, same for Gen 5.

25 Gbps only needs a 3.0 x4 or 2.0 x8 link. If you're crazy, you can put 40 Gbps in your desktop with 3.0 x8, or 100 Gbps with 3.0 x16.
