Avatars:

You can add a personal touch by having an avatar: a small picture just below your name. Because avatars collectively take up a lot of server space and bandwidth, we ask that you keep your avatar file as small as possible. There is a maximum limit of 10k for avatars, but of course smaller is even better. In choosing a picture, please keep in mind that this is a G rated forum. If your avatar wouldn’t be useable in a G rated movie, you may be asked to remove it. Even beyond that, we ask that you keep in mind that this forum is viewed by thousands of people from all over the world. While it is of course impossible to please all of the people all of the time, you should try to choose an avatar that won’t unduly disturb other forum members. Accordingly you should avoid avatars that are gross, violent, sexually provocative, contentious, portray illegal or immoral activities, or that are otherwise likely to be disturbing to other forum members. If a moderator deems that your avatar does not fall within these guidelines, they may at their option either remove it directly or ask that you remove it. Although a moderator will typically seek the opinion of others before removing an avatar, they do have the authority to simply remove the avatar immediately if they deem that is the best course of action.

If you have a problem with someone else’s avatar, first try to remember that tolerance is a two way street. If you expect other’s to be tolerant of you, it’s important that you be tolerant of them. So stop and ask yourself whether you might not be overreacting. If you decide that you are not overreacting, then send a PM to a moderator explaining why you believe that the avatar is inappropriate. Please understand that the moderators are very busy, and also that their viewpoint is likely to be somewhat different than yours. It may take a while for them to respond, and in the end they may not agree with you. In such a case, please remember that tolerance is a virtue and learning it can at times be a bit discomforting.

Kudos to nihili for writing this policy.
