If you're experiencing the loss of your Live Drive when you upgrade your Live drivers try this as suggested by Creative support.
"I am very sorry that you have had this much trouble. This is a known issue to where there is a little quirk on the Windows XP/2000 updated drivers for the Live cards where if you run the driver update with the Live Drive connected to the sound card, it will somehow remove the drivers for the Live Drive. However, if you uninstall everything for the sound card through Add/Remove Programs. Then, install the drivers from the original installation CD. Shut down the computer and disconnect the cable that goes from the sound card to the Live Drive. Restart the computer and run the updated drivers that you downloaded. Shut the computer back down and reconnect the Live Drive. Once you boot up, you should have both the updated drivers and the Live Drive working".

Make sure you follow the suggested order of install (ReadMe) for the 5 individual upgrades within the main package. Reboot between each install too.
