i heard you're NEVER supposed to use flux on electronics components?
can anyone confirm this?

Agreed. In one of my engineering class labs last week we measured strain using a wheatstone bridge but before that we had to set up the strain guages on the specimen (metal bar). We had to solder wires to the strain guages and we used liquid flux before we soldered. It's standard practice.
