provided for, is the tried and true method of updating/recovery/flashing the bios of a NVidia 6X00 series card

a delicate procedure, only so slightly different than all the rest, but if any step is left out, well, maybe you'll come to like expensive paperweights

the list of cards proven to work:

I. 6800 GT and Ultra tried and proven - 23082004

READ THE ENTIRE THREAD BEFORE PROCEEDING

and:

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK

you will need the following files:

<link 1, nvflash 4.42>

<link 2, nvflash 5.08>

<link 3, nvshksum>

<link 4, bios files>

with all the files downloaded, gather them all into a folder onto a drive and folder readable from dos

(p.s. access to a PCI VGA card is recommended before you start)

1. boot into dos

2. using "nvflash 5.08", backup your old bios:

nvflash -b

3. using nvchksum, write a new chksum for the bios file you are intending to flash with:

nvchksum biosfile.rom

(replace "biosfile" with whatever the file name is)

4. using the "nvflash 4.42":

nvflash -p -u -2 "biosfile".rom

(replace "biosfile" with whatever the file name is)

5. wait for the numlock/caps lock/scroll lock lights to flash and stop flashing

6. reboot, back into dos (use key combination ctrl-alt-del. NOT the reset button)

7. using the "nvflash 5.08":

nvflash "biosfile".rom

(replace "biosfile" with whatever the file name is)

8. wait for the numlock/caps lock/scroll lock lights to flash and stop flashing

9. reboot (use key combination ctrl-alt-del. NOT the reset button)

10. re-install your detonator drivers

any step missing from the procedure described above will most likely result in an expensive paperweight of what was once a graphics card

flashing the card twice is needed to override a possible PCI-ID mismatch, and also to update the secondary ID of the card, and is also a nessesary step

the manufacturer of the card is unimportant, as long as your card is the reference nvidia design; you don't need to choose a bios based on the manufacturer, but instead on individual clockspeeds and voltage, and also a reliable and tested bios version instead of just simply the "newest"

fafnir, the links to the download don't work, not sure if that was a mistake or what. But nice guide, will help a lot of people itching to have a potetional 400$ paperweight.

Also, I don't like this guide. There is no explanation or separation between "recovery" (meaning bios failure) and "updating". This thing needs to be re-written.

Also, the "GT" bios posted in the thread IS NOT A GT BIOS. It's an Ultra bios, which performs poorly on the average GT (like my PNY GT) probably because of the memory timings.
