Does the onboard sound matter if you're doing HDMI passthrough

I know better onboard sound changes things if you're using stuff that requires a DAC like the headphone jack, but if I have the audio going to an external receiver by way of HDMI, does the sound card do anything or is all the audio processing done by the receiver?

yep, the audio is being passed through unmolested digitally to be processed by the receiver.

Yup. One of the reasons to get a DAC and or receiver is the lousy mobo DAC.
